01 / The mechanism and its boundary
What is being described
The Verifiable Compute Foundation (VCF) is an independent nonprofit working on techniques for verifying AI development and use while protecting models, data and trade secrets S-0091. It reports providing a free AI-verification research cluster in the Bay Area, operated on its behalf by Lucid Computing S-0091:
- VCF reports two H100 nodes operational through a beta launch S-0091. It lists NVIDIA H200, NVIDIA B300 Blackwell Ultra and AMD Instinct MI355X hardware as scheduled additions S-0091.
- VCF lists bare-metal and confidential-computing access, with physical instrumentation including optical fibre taps, side-channel probes, software-defined radios and network analysers S-0091. It invites applications from academic labs, nonprofits, startups, industry and government teams working on AI verification S-0091.
- According to Lucid, the cluster is "free for qualifying safety & verification research", the foundation allocates it through a fair-share process, and Lucid "takes no part in allocation decisions" S-1702 S-1406.
- Lucid's cluster page lists the research areas as workload forensics from power and emission signatures, probing of TEEs and confidential computing, network observation, firmware and root-of-trust inspection, and in-path hardware such as DPUs and FPGAs S-1702. These areas bear on workload classification from side channels, TEE remote attestation and network taps.
